Senior Moving
Moving after living somewhere for decades isn’t easy. Every room holds memories. Every closet has items collected over a lifetime. The whole process feels overwhelming.
At B&B Moving & Storage, we understand that senior moves require patience, respect, and a different approach than typical relocations. We’ve helped hundreds of Connecticut seniors transition to new homes, assisted living communities, and retirement residences since 2003.
Why Senior Moves Are Different
This isn’t just about moving furniture. Seniors are often leaving homes where they raised families, celebrated holidays, and built entire lives. The emotional weight is real.
Physical limitations change how moves work. Lifting boxes, climbing stairs, and long days of packing aren’t realistic for many seniors. Health concerns, mobility issues, and stamina all factor into planning.
Downsizing adds complexity. A lifetime of belongings won’t fit into a smaller retirement apartment. Decisions about what to keep, donate, or pass to family members take time and can be emotionally draining.
Family dynamics come into play too. Adult children often coordinate moves for parents, sometimes from out of state. Communication needs to flow between multiple people, and everyone has opinions about how things should be handled.
Our Approach to Senior Moving
We slow down. There’s no rushing through a senior move. We work at whatever pace feels comfortable, taking breaks when needed and never making anyone feel pressured.
We listen carefully. Seniors know what matters to them and what they need. We ask questions, understand preferences, and adjust our approach based on individual situations.
Respect guides everything we do. We’re handling someone’s lifetime of possessions and memories. Our crew treats every item with care and dignity, understanding that even seemingly ordinary objects might hold deep meaning.
Clear communication matters. We explain each step, answer questions thoroughly, and make sure everyone understands what’s happening and when. No confusion, no surprises.
Common Senior Moving Situations
Some seniors are moving by choice to smaller, more manageable homes or to be closer to family. These moves are still emotional but often feel more positive.
Others are moving to assisted living or memory care facilities because they need additional support. These transitions can be difficult, especially if the senior feels they’re losing independence.
Sometimes seniors move after losing a spouse. The family home feels too big and full of memories. Starting fresh somewhere new helps with healing, but the move itself is emotionally challenging.
Health emergencies occasionally force quick moves. A fall, illness, or sudden decline means the family needs to relocate their parent immediately. These urgent situations require flexibility and understanding.
Downsizing Help
Most seniors are moving from larger homes to much smaller spaces. That four-bedroom colonial doesn’t fit into a one-bedroom apartment. Tough decisions need to happen.
We help families think through what’s essential. Favorite furniture that fits the new space. Important documents and photos. Items with real sentimental value. Daily necessities and comfort items.
Heirlooms often get distributed to family members during senior moves. We can coordinate delivering specific items to different family members’ homes, not just to the senior’s new residence.
Donations clear out good items that won’t fit in the new space. We work with local Connecticut charities and can arrange pickup for furniture, clothing, and household goods.
Some items need to be sold. Estate sale companies can help with valuable pieces. We coordinate with these services if needed, especially for larger collections or valuable antiques.
Working With Families
Adult children often manage their parents’ moves, especially if they live in Connecticut while their parents moved here from elsewhere, or vice versa. We keep everyone informed with regular updates.
Family disagreements sometimes arise about what to keep, where things go, or how to handle the move. We stay neutral and focused on the practical work while families work through decisions.
Out-of-state family members can participate remotely. We provide photos, video calls from the moving site, and detailed updates so everyone feels involved even if they can’t be physically present.
Medical needs sometimes require coordination with healthcare providers. If medical equipment needs moving or if timing needs to work around treatments or appointments, we build that into our schedule.
Moving to Senior Living Communities
Retirement communities, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes all have specific requirements and restrictions. We know what to expect at Connecticut’s senior living facilities.
Space is limited in most senior apartments. We help families understand what will realistically fit and make suggestions about prioritizing essential items.
Many facilities have specific moving hours, elevator reservations, and access procedures. We handle all the coordination with facility management so you don’t have to navigate those details.
Some communities are furnished or partially furnished. We focus on moving personal items, keepsakes, and whatever additional furniture fits within the space and facility guidelines.
Packing With Care
We sort through items methodically, room by room. Seniors can be involved as much or as little as they want in the packing process.
Personal items get individual attention. Photo albums, letters, special mementos. These aren’t just thrown in boxes. We pack them carefully and make sure they’re easily accessible at the new home.
Medical supplies, medications, and daily necessities are packed last and clearly labeled. These items need to be unpacked first at the destination.
We create detailed inventories, especially important when family members are taking certain items. Everyone knows what went where and nothing gets lost or misplaced.
Moving Day Considerations
The senior doesn’t need to be present for the entire move if it’s too tiring. Many families arrange for their parent to stay with relatives or friends during the actual moving day.
If the senior wants to be there, we set up a comfortable chair in a quiet spot where they can rest and still be part of the process.
We protect floors, walls, and doorways carefully. Many seniors have lived in their homes for decades and take pride in keeping them nice, even as they’re leaving.
Weather matters more with senior moves. We avoid moving in extreme heat, cold, or ice if possible. Seniors and their families shouldn’t have to deal with harsh conditions on top of everything else.
Setting Up the New Home
We don’t just unload boxes randomly. We set up the new space thoughtfully, placing furniture where it works best and creating a comfortable, functional layout.
Beds are assembled and made with linens if provided. Bathrooms are set up with towels and necessities. The kitchen has dishes and basics unpacked. The senior can move in and feel at home immediately.
Familiar items go in visible places. Photos on the nightstand, favorite chair by the window, beloved books on the shelf. These touches help a new place feel more like home.
We hang pictures and arrange decorations if needed. Small details make a big difference in helping seniors feel settled and comfortable quickly.
What We Don’t Do
We’re not estate liquidators or organizers, though we can recommend professionals who specialize in those services. Our focus is on the physical move itself.
We can’t provide medical care or assistance, but we work around medical needs and coordinate with family caregivers.
Legal and financial decisions about property or belongings aren’t our area. We can work with attorneys or financial advisors handling estate matters, but those decisions happen separately from the move.
Making It Easier
Start early if possible. Last-minute senior moves are stressful for everyone. Even a few weeks of gradual preparation helps tremendously.
Involve the senior in decisions when appropriate. Moving is hard enough without feeling like everything is being decided by others.
Be patient with the emotional process. Leaving a longtime home brings up feelings. Allow time for goodbyes and memories.
Focus on the positives of the new situation. Closer to family, less maintenance, better support, new community. Change is hard but often leads to good things.
